Spay and Neuter

Spay or Neuter

It is recommended that most dogs be spayed (female) or castrated/neutered (male) around 6 months of age. Larger breed dogs can wait a bit longer, as there are new studies showing that early spay/castration can affect their joint health in later life. If you have a large breed dog, our veterinarians will discuss this with you.

Spaying or castrating your dog at the right time can help prevent numerous behavioural issues and health problems.

Female dogs who are spayed are less likely to develop dangerous mammary tumours and uterine infections. These conditions both require expensive surgical intervention and can be deadly. Spaying also prevents having to take care of (and pay for) numerous litters of unplanned puppies.

Castrating the males can reduce the risk of urine marking, prostate diseases, and aggression.
